COCOS ISLAND

24 OCT - 3 NOV 2026

We want to return to Cocos Island because it left an unforgettable mark on us. When we visited in 2023, we were enchanted by its pirate legends, lost treasure lore, and the raw, jungle-covered beauty rising from the sea. But it was the diving that truly stirred something deep. Encounters with hammerheads, manta rays, and other pelagic life made every dive unforgettable. Cocos felt like stepping into a myth, both above and below the surface. It’s the rare sense of wonder, mystery, and wildness that draws us back to this extraordinary place.

Hammerhead Heaven

Cocos Island is renowned for its massive schools of scalloped hammerhead sharks. Divers often find themselves surrounded by these enigmatic predators, sweeping past in mesmerizing formation. It's one of the rare places on Earth where witnessing such congregations is not only possible, but expected.

Big Animal Encounters

There’s no need to hope for a big sighting, chances are, it’s already circling. Tiger sharks, whale sharks, and massive Galapagos sharks show up without fanfare. Rays drift past like shadows.

The Wild Edge

Cocos doesn’t feel like anywhere else. The ocean moves with energy, the reef walls drop away into deep blue, and the water hums with life. There’s a sense of anticipation before every dive, like something extraordinary could appear at any moment. And often, it does.

A Remote Adventure with Rich History

Cocos Island's isolation makes it feel like stepping into another world. Beyond its breathtaking dive sites, it holds a history of pirates, explorers, and conservationists. Its remoteness adds a sense of discovery. Every dive feels like exploring a place that’s been largely untouched by time.

about COCOS island

A remote gem in the eastern Pacific, Cocos Island is a UNESCO-listed marine sanctuary with a rich history of pirate legends and rumored hidden treasures. Cocos Island's marine ecosystem is one of the most unique and biodiverse in the world, shaped by its remote location in the eastern Pacific. Situated about 550 km off Costa Rica's mainland, it lies within the Eastern Tropical Pacific Marine Corridor, a vital migratory route connecting Galapagos, Malpelo and Coiba,

Towering pinnacles, volcanic formations and deep-water currents create an ecosystem that supports some of the ocean's most impressive marine life. Schools of hammerheads, tiger sharks and manta rays thrive in its nutrient-rich waters.

In recent years, stricter marine protections and increased patrolling have helped curb illegal fishing, allowing shark populations to recover. These conservation efforts ensure Cocos remains a thriving sanctuary for marine megafauna and a dream destination for divers seeking world-class encounters.

top dive sites

ALCYONE

Named after Jacques Cousteau’s research vessel, Alcyone is a 25-meter-deep seamount and one of Cocos Island’s most iconic dive sites. Massive schools of hammerhead sharks are the main draw, often accompanied by eagle rays and other pelagic life. The site's unique underwater topography and steady currents create ideal conditions for thrilling big-animal encounters in the open blue.

DIRTY ROCK

Named for the bird droppings that cover its surface, Dirty Rock is a Cocos favorite known for its dynamic underwater landscape and abundant marine life. Galapagos sharks and eagle rays often cruise by, while dense schools of jacks swirl around the rock formations. It’s a vibrant, high-energy site with plenty to take in on every dive.

MANUELITA

As you descend at Manuelita, glance toward the island—a pirate-like skull shape appears in the rocks, setting the tone for an unforgettable dive. This site offers Cocos’ best chance to see tiger sharks up close. Galapagos sharks cruise the reef edge, hammerheads drift through the blue, and whitetip reef sharks rest calmly in the sandy shallows.

DOS AMIGOS

This dive site features two islets—Big Dos Amigos and Small Dos Amigos—each offering something special. Big Dos Amigos is famous for its stunning, coral-covered arch, a dramatic swim-through often surrounded by pelagics. At Small Dos Amigos, we encountered an unusually friendly whale shark that kept coming back to play with our bubbles. Both sites attract Galapagos sharks and hammerheads.
